NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The
33rd Sabre National Championships will be held at Brighton
Beach in Adelaide SA from the 27th December to the 3rd January
2010. Ian James and Bill Gillham will be flying the flag for
WA. This will be the first Sabre Nationals WA will have boats
competing. So Ian and Bill do WA proud. Brian and Jenny Jones
will also be flying over towards the end of the championships
to attend the National AGM to report on the WA Association
and see how Sabre National Championships are managed, which
will benefit the Association when we hold the WA's Nationals
in 2014/2015. We wish all sailors the best of luck.
MERCHANDISE
Sabres WA have merchandise available
to order. Merchandise available include red polo shirts (mens
or ladies sizes) which include the Sabre logo and your boat
name or Sabrettes (for the non sailing ladies) and red caps
featuring the Sabre logo. To order contact Kathy Depiazzi.
GO
SAILING DAY
Approximately 50 visitors participated
in Go Sailing Day at PDSC in perfect weather, there was a large
amount of interest for the Sabres. Thank you to Jenny and Brian
Jones who managed the Sabre enquries and display of Sabre photos,
banners, and brochures. Unfortunately as the Sabre is single
handed it was a risk to let newcomers take the boat out however
Dennis Thompson sailed his boat as a demonstration. Follow ups
are now under way to see if we can convert the interest into
new members. The next Go Sailing Day will be the 6th November
2011
WA
SAIL CLASSIC
The
regatta was held on the 24th October 2010 and hosted by the
Perth Dinghy Sailing Club in conjunction with WA Week. A number
of other classes from other yacht club participated. With
6 Sabres participating this ensured we were classed as a fleet
and had our own starting line. Three short races were conducted
over the day. Well done to all sailors.

OPENING DAY
Unfortunately
the weather wasn't very kind for Shelley Yacht Club Opening
Day, the bad weather is becoming a regular with last years
weather also not very good.
It
was a struggle to launch the boats of the beach at the start
with the large waves breaking in 20 – 30 knots of winds and
rain. Only two boats finished Rob Depiazzi and Ray Martin.
Ray finished first after Rob Depiazzi capsized metres from
the finish line.

11.00am and 2.00pm at IGA Supermarket Cnr Randford & Campbell
Rds Canning Vale. So if you are in the area please drop in,

PERTH
DINGHY SAILING CLUB 107th SEASON PRESENTATION NIGHT.
The
PDSC Presentation Night was held on the Saturday 22nd May
2010 at PDSC. Despite a wintery evening over 120 people attended
the evening. It was a great evening over a three course meal
to catch up with fellow sailors and their partners, even though
at times it was difficult to recognise everyone out of their
sailing gear and in their semi formal attire. Trophies for
all classes sailed at the PDSC were presented on the night.
Congratulations to our Club Champion "First Sabre

with large waves and a long course. Sunday morning the wind
had dropped to about 10-15 knots and still easterly with a
shorter course and on Sunday afternoon the wind had dropped
again to about 10 knots. By Monday morning the wind had died

Bill Gilham represented the PDSC at the 12th Australian Masters

Sailing a hired Sabre he came third in the first race. Being
unknown from Perth they thought this can't happen so they
stitched him up after that, but he had a good time and learnt
a lot…maybe too much

SABRE
SAILING HAS STARTED IN WA
As
you would have seen on the website earlier, Sabres have begun
sailing in Western Australia with numbers dramatically increasing
over the past year.
The
Association is now registered as well as being affiliated
with Yachting Western Australia and very soon we should be
affiliated with the Australian Sabre Association.
We
are currently sailing from the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club located
at Matilda Bay on the Swan River.
We
held our inaugural AGM Saturday 29 th August and combined
the meeting with a welcomed visit from Phil Johnson (the National
Measurer). We had an excellent roll up of Sabre skippers,
who found Phil's visit very informative on all aspects of
the Sabre. Phil trained our WA State Measurer Robert Depiazzi
on how to correctly measurer our boats as well speaking at
the AGM. We would like to thank Phil for making the trip over
and thanks also to Mike Simpson for helping arrange the visit.
We
currently have 13 boats with 11 skippers, with interest growing
continually. Boat construction over the winter months has
been intense. 7 Boats have been constructed.
At the start
of the season in October we should have 10 boats definitely
starting, with the other boats joining the fleet as they complete
construction. To publicise the Sabres over here even further,
we are going to visit other yacht clubs opening days, envisaging
that they might start up their own fleets.
