On Sunday 4th October, 9 Sabres arrived at Safety Bay Yacht Club (Rockingham) to help celebrate and participate in their opening day.

We had representation from PDSC, EFYC and 2 local boats

WInd was 15 - 20 knots - plenty of hiking, down wind surfing (great waves) and very fast reaching - perfect course.

Results -

1st Pete Coop

2nd Craig Nylund

3rd Paul Giadresco

Big thanks to Craig Nyland and Commodore Anthony Saw for organising a great afternoons sailing followed by drinks and Pizza.

Thanks to everyone for making the effort to support this club - Bob, Peter, Clayton, Paul, Tony (Welcome to Sabre World), Craig, Carl, Louis and brilliant to see Graham Hill down there with Teri.

We wish them well going forward and look forward to seeing their Sabre fleet flourish.

As SBYC race on Sundays it gives those of us with Saturday club racing the opportunity to practice on the ocean.

All agreed that it is a great place to sail and will endeavour to get back throughout the season.

They are having a regatta on Australia Day - last year this attracted over 70 boats so I would encourage you to put it in the diary and try and get down.

Opening Day at EFYC produced light SEwinds, so we used one of our new courses (No 5), start to Millar, then via Mosman to the finish. 10 boats started, including 2 from PDSC.
After a General recall, the restart saw several boats start prematurely,  The wind in the Reach was fickle, but filled in as we moved into Mosman Bay and Pete Coop took the lead around the Navigation marks, followed by Peter and Blair Mieklejohn. In the beat to Millar , the fleet split, with the lead changing as the wind shifted and varied in strength. Stacey Arnold went right into the Pt Walter shore and developed a commanding lead which he maintained to the finish. Pete Coop finished second, with Bruce Moorman, in only his first official race in third place. Blair was a close 4th, but was disqualified as he was OCD and Peter was next.
It was good to see that the fleet finished within 3/4 minutes of the first finishers. I think this will reflect the close racing we will experience this season

Dates start this weekend with East Fremantle's Opening Day on this Sunday, along with TCYC's Opening Day. All Sabre Sailors are welcome to attend and have a sail. Let's try and support our Sabre Clubs Opening Days as much as we can by getting as many Sabres to attend.
