The Sabres kicked off their 1st leg at TCYC Rockingham on Sunday 22nd November.

The wind ranged from 10-15 knots throughout the day, with the afternoon races gusting 17-18 knots which made for exciting reaches and tough upwind legs.

Unusually, the wind direction was blowing Northerly, swinging around to the West in the afternoon. This meant that the normal, Rockingham flat water was replaced with some interesting waves and swell.

The racing was incredibly close, with places changing on every leg.

17 Sabres entered with a high quality fleet.

Scott Olsen has returned to Sabres after a 12 month break, which is testimony to the appeal of this great boat.

We would like to acknowledge the brilliant race organisation delivered by Race Officer Alan Campbell and his team - yet again, as per last year, he got 4 races in with minimum delays and good courses.

In addition, I would to thank Commodore Kevin Sneddon for the warm welcome we received.

I would also like to thank our own WA support crew - Charlotte, Chelsea, Ryan, Laura, Linn and Kelly who following the morning races, stayed on shore to help recover the boats upon their return with an onshore breeze/waves on the beach. We also would like to thank Rob & Kathy Depiazzi for their effort in measuring sails, and making sure we were all complaint on the day and assisting with admin

We look forward to seeing you all for leg 2 at Nedlands next Sunday.

On Saturday 7 November we had 13 starters, including Craig Nylund, a regular visitor from Safety Bay and a new visitor trying out the Association boat Tiwi. Two races were sailed in gusty conditions and both were won by Pete Coop. Following closely behind him were Nick Loney, sailing a borrowed boat from Perth Dinghy Sailing Club (which he is considering buying), Craig, Dave Quinn and Peter Johnston. Nick achieved the perfect result of first on handicap in both races. Will he buy that boat?

The competition in the Sabre fleet is quite intense, one mistake and 3 or 4 places can be lost, which can be difficult to regain. Everyone is learning how to sail faster. Special mention must be made of Kelly Mirragliotta, who has been practising regularly and has been improving rapidly.

We have had one Club Championship race so far this season, with Pete Coop first, Stacey Arnold second, followed by Peter Johnston in 3rd. Will this be the pattern for the season? The next heat is on 14 November and will be hotly contested.

Wednesday afternoon sailing has provided excellent opportunities for training and we have averaged 5 Sabres, with the best turnout of 8 last week. This training has been invaluable for sail setting and tactical competition, in a training environment.

We are looking forward to the State Champion heats on 22 and 29 November 2015.

Sabre sailors beware! Former National and WA State Champion Scott Olsen has returned to Sabres this week.

After having his new YMS boat christened at Perth Dinghy Sailing Club on Saturday. He went out and demolished the competitive fleet with three easy race wins, even with a few new boat "teething issues"  - the mainsail that kept falling down throughout the races.

It was great to see him, wife Julie and children Henry and Clara back at the PDSC.
