Black Rock’s Sabre fleet ran a coaching day last Saturday in some interesting wind conditions. Jarka Kluth and Bruce Abbott, ably assisted by Steve Douglas, Geoff Dresser and Harold Medd, drew upon their sailing knowledge and techniques to focus on sail set up, boat speed and handling. It started with a short classroom session followed by two on water sessions, all supported by two RIB’s with Jarka coaching from one with Steve and Bruce in the other.

14 Sabres, including two Vic Association boats took part and were joined by 125’s. Participants covered a broad range of experience, ranging from quite recent through to seasoned sailors. In the morning’s light northerly, we sailed between four in line buoys, focussing on roll tacking, gybing and 180’s. It was a short, busy race course, full of boats; good experience in preparation for the Vic State Championships next February where we expect some 60 participants.

After a lunchtime debrief accompanied by Geoff’s delicious sausages, the team was again about to take to the water when a 30knot front came through from the north. This would have been an interesting time to test our heavy wind sailing techniques however, caution prevailed and the session was postponed for 30 minutes.

The front subsided again to a light breeze which progressively swung into the west. We organised three short windward return races. Unfortunately for Glen Abbott, there were no prizes for first. Particularly in the case of the newer sailors, considerable improvement was seen.

Overall, the day was well received and attended and continues to build on our sailing capability. Our inclusive, welcoming and sharing culture aims to get the back of the fleet to improve its skills and challenge the fleet leaders. Thanks to the volunteers who made it happen.

The John Seeber Memorial Sabre Teams Race was successfully conducted at Mordialloc on Saturday 7th April with 16 boats divided into 4 mixed teams of (hopefully) equal skills. The weather was light with a 3-5 knot southerly veering to a south easterly that eventually faded to near nothing by the end of the race.

Number 1 and 2 members of each team sailed a slightly longer course on the first lap. This gave the number 3 and 4 team members the experience of being at the sharp end of the fleet whilst giving the more experienced sailors the taste of being in the latter half of the fleet for at least some part of the race.

The fleet was  well bunched up at the end of the first race providing a good result for this type of format. It's a format that would work at club races as it encourages Sabre members in the second half of the fleet to gain experience and continue to turn up each week.

There was only 4 points between 1st and 3rd teams that showed that the team selection process does work.

The weekend of March 3rd-4th saw a great turn out of 11 female Sabre sailors at the Women On Water event hosted by Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club (SSCBC). In their typical committed fashion the ‘Sabrettes’ keenly attended the training event focused on delivering quality coaching, skills and confidence building, and guaranteed fun for all levels of femal sailors!

SSCBC secured a top line up of experienced and encouraging female coaches and race management, ensuring the event ran smoothly and participants were able to take home some great key learnings.

The weekend proved to be a mix of conditions with some excitement, two up boat sailing and wayward boat retrieving on the Saturday afternoon after a high wind front passed through. One ‘Sabrette’ positively posting her weekend learning on Facebook as,“I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning to sail my ship”(Louise Alcott).

Competition was not amiss amongst the friendly natured Sabrettes with the race series top positions going to:

1st Lisa Barrand

2nd Fiona McCulloch

3rd Wendy Wilson

Thanks to SSCBC for a great weekend and all the coaches for sharing their valuable insight and endless encouragement! We look forward to next year.
