58 Sabres lined up for the 2019 Vic Championships at Elwood SC. Gary McLennan (BRYC) defended his title taking top honours with three first places from Chris Dance (MAS). Then followed the successful Nationals duo of Alan Riley and Murray O’Brien (McCYC), with Geoff Smith (BYS) in fifth place.

In a close contest, Fi Martin won the women’s title from Michelle de Blaquiere (MMYC), Lisa Barrand (McCYC) and Wendy Wilson (SYC). Liam O’Brien added to his success in the Sabre Nationals by winning the youth division and was 14th overall.

Overall results can be seen here.

Unfortunately the weather conspired against us with 25 knot winds on Saturday gusting up to 40 knots and big seas causing racing to be abandoned. However our time was well used in discussions led by very experienced and successful sailors on how they have been able to win big races. Interesting that Gary and Chris led the discussion section aimed at top of fleet sailors and showed their prowess on the course next day. Coaching discussions were completed around the bar and later during a tasty Indian buffet meal.

By comparison, Sunday provided light and variable winds enabling four races to be sailed and with one drop, the series was decided on the best of three placings.

All 58 competitors complimented the Elwood Sailing Club Organisers, Race Officers and Volunteers for a most enjoyable and well run series in difficult weather conditions. It is very pleasing to see the growth of Sabres in the club, with now some 20 boats registered.
