    Hi readers,

We had a great weekend of sailing at Lake Cootharaba. Six Sabres competed. On water we had light to fresh winds, mostly SW (typical August)! The event attracted 64 entries overall.

Here are the overall results showing Savre fleet placings are as follows:

Overall Place Skipper Club Series result R4 R3 R2 R1
    1 Susan Hextell RQYS 23 10 [10.00] 8 5
    2 Anne Mussett 27 12 [16.00] 9 6
    3 Kathy Green CYC 30 [14.00] 12 11 7
    4 Wendy Witt SYC 42 16 14 [16.00] 12
    5 Ian Brooke SYC 63 [25.00C] 21 20 22.00S
    6 Phil Briggs CYC 67 25.00C 20 [25.00C] 22.00F

Phil had a gear failure on Saturday – he pulled the mainsheet block off the floor of the boat – which meant he could not complete the Saturday races, and cost him the event Ancient Mariner award that he was defending.

Ian Brooke has been asking us hard questions – and is our Most Improved Sabre sailor. Ian competed with an injured toe sustained a week ago and still healing.

The Sabre girls had some excellent on water battles, with close racing in all races. there was a ‘yippee’ from Kathy when she got to the top mark in first place in one race. Well deserved.

Anne sailed consistently in the fresher winds. Their was a high level of determination all round, led by Wendy who remained focussed in all races. So nobody could afford to make a mistake.

Dinner at the Apollonian Hotel was a great reward at the end of the day, and a few wines were consumed as we recounted the day and generally had a good time.

    Overall, a great weekend,

    Sue

    Hi,
I am blonde – so I need clear explanation.

Is a post between the exiting mainsheet block and the (inside) keel of the boat alllowable? (Y/N)

If so, is it also allowable to have it braced to the thwart? (Y/N)

Sorry guys to be so slow!

    Hi,
For the southerners keenly or jealously eyeing the Qld fleet, we had SIX Sabres in the regatta, which attracted 75 entries overall.

Race 1 was a moderate SW, and Race 2 a fading SW, ending in a tow home from the finish area.

We all had some learnings from the event – myself, that it is NOT good to start before your Numeral Pennant is displayed (yep I took off with the wrong fleet in Race 1, and Gary followed me!). Others got confused about the trapezoidal courses – sailing N1 rather than N2, or N1 rather than O1 and some other variations!

Dinner on Saturday night was great – although the President was scolded by the waitress for having a non-club susbstance on the table!! The perils of leadership!!

Apart from the Sabre sailors, a few others joined in as onshore support etc over the weekend which was greatly appreciated and made for a good weekend.

Sunday, the wind was not kind, and although race 3 was started, after about 90 mins all racing was abandoned and the fleet towed home.

Results on the Qld site soon,

PS Please collect empty 1litre Ribena containers for our next dinner outing.

    hello readers,

St George and It’s an Illusion sailed on the Saturday at Toukley, the weather then went to light winds and cold, so….

Anne and Sue had a holiday at Norah Head, then set off northward to Brisbane on the Monday.

    Boats travelled well.

Its an Illusion sailed at RQYS last weekend and did well (was in disguise with a different sail number and the name ‘Slow Hand’ so as to not confuse the volunteers recording results).

Several people commented on the boat, its natural beauty, and attractiveness as an alternative class.

    G’day folks,

All good advice, here is a bit more …..

To remove the ‘sticky’ glue, you can also use drycleaning fluid (Murlex).
Lay the sail out on a flat clean surface, then dab the murlex onto the sticky areas and scrape off the glue.
The Murlex may seep thru to the underside, so if that is a risk and you are concerned, place something absorbent underneath.

Dacron sails also respond well to the use of ‘ironing aid’ and a warm iron.
Again, a flat clean surface is needed.
Interestingly the ironing aid tends to help lift out dirt from the dacron.

    Hi,
I am glad you picked up on the creatures bit!! I thought it a nice twist, without distorting the facts of describing the dodge tide.

How do you know the mark moved? Is the position based on where you changed direction?? Could it be that you rounded the mark 115m away from where you rounded it the first time? For example, having to give bouy room to a lot of boats. But I guess that wouldn’t be 115m would it. Maybe 10m in a bad situation.

If you get the data loaded and learn/discover anything else I would be interested to know.

    Good sailing,

    Sue

    G’day Steve,
You have had a few readers – but no replies – I offer my suggestions and reasoning, for consideration ….

    Point 1
Refer to RRS Appendx L – Sailing Instructions Guide, Principle 1 …. that the SIs should include two tpes of statement: the intentions of the race committee and the obligations of competitors.

Application: the Sabre Association, can, by the contnt of the SIs, use them as guidance to a race committee, especially in matters that may be seen as required in supporting the class ethos, values etc.

    Point 2
Refer RRS Appendix J – NoR and SIs, attention to J2.2 (suggestions for consideration for inclusion in SIs), in particular J2.2 (35) … the minimum number of boats appearing in the starting area required for a race to be started”.

Application: much of the discussion post Heat 4 was on ‘the class wanting to ensure maximum involvement and participation of sailors at all lvels in events such as States and Nationals’. Inclusion of a SA statement basedon J2.2 (35), with a specified percentage of entries would circumvent re-ocurrence and provide a quantifiable and clear ‘class view’ on participation requirements to a race committee conducting eventson behalf of the association.

    Point 3
Refer RS J2.1 (9) – NoR and SIs, required cotent. Noting that the scoring system may inclue eference to te class rules or other rules governing he event (which includes the SIs).

Refer (as an example) 125 Contitution 2008 Part III – Administration Australian Championship, para 42 “if the Australian Championships include back-to-back races there must be provision for more than one (1) dropped race, if five (5) or more races are sailed”.

    Application:
    (1) The Constitution, or equivalent establishing document, can include guidance on any aspect of the conduct of National Championships – for automatic inclusion in SIs. Apart from the quote above, there is also mention re use of GPS etc, order of hosting, some host responsibilities.
    (2) Where back-to-back raes occur, damage in the first race can often force a competitor to be a DNS for the second race. The flexibility to have two drops where back-to-back races occur (planned,or as a result of re-sails) would reduce the unplanned impact on many sailors, and make for an overall fairer sailing ompetition.

These idea provided for serious consideration
