Andrew Denman from Denman Marine in Tas is your man. He brings in the best BS1088 plywood and will select the lightest sheets for a build where weight is critical. Even though he is off the mainland, the subsidised freight works out about the same as from other cap cities.

    Good luck with your build.

Sabres on Pittwater would be a great thing – maybe BYRA could host the next Nationals to kickstart the fleet??

    Good sailing,

the ronstan one has almost the same config…if you attach with self tappers you can get away with the same holes, perhaps not for rivets. sadly it’s a far inferior fitting.

The Goldspar one is very hard to source these days. In my opinion it is much better than the Ronstan and other equivalents. Sometimes you can find chandlers with old stock…if so, grab every spare one you can and advertise them here!

Thanks Phil…that clears up a lot of confusion. A question though…on the YMS hull the keel post is quite narrow and can’t accommodate the standard Ronstan ball swivel base to which the length of ss tubing and mainsheet ratchet block is traditionally attached. Is there anything in the rules to prevent attaching slightly wider timber block underneath (as one might do with a wedge beneath a cam cleat) in order to mount the swivel base on the keel? Otherwise it would be a matter of having a non standard base machined up somehow, or using dyneema and struts which seems rather cumbersome.

    Cheers,

A lot of Sabre sailors seem to sheet directly off the boom downwind to get a more direct response when pumping. Only recently I was shown the trick of reversing the mainsheet so that the purchase is virtually eliminated and the response even more direct. Sheeting like this requires more vang as the mainsheet is just controlling boom position rather than twist.

Unlike a lot of the Bethwaite design skiffs that have eliminated the cockpit mainsheet block altogether, the Sabre sheeting system I’m most familiar with still incorporates a floor mounted block. I don’t know if this is a rule or just a trend…but it feels more comfortable upwind to be sheeting off a more stable point.

    Hi All

Training video is still happening. We got some good vision from the October 2005 training weekend but haven’t had the opportunity to capture anything more since. We’ll need to get Wayne or someone of equal distinction to perform some on water skills close to shore so we can shoot a few angles and ideally get some stuff suitable for slow mo (such as roll tacking).

If I can get a few more weekends off next season the project should come together quite quickly. We’ve cut a 3 minute promo from the Black Rock vision and it looks pretty good. Not sure what the sabre site capabilities are but if someone wants to get it encoded I’m happy to make it available.

    Good sailing

We took some vision at the SSAV training weekend as the first stages of making a a DVD that will hopefully serve as both a training and promotional tool. Over the course of this season we plan to capture some additional sailing footage and more tips from our gun sailors to add to that. Time permitting we’ll compile it over the winter.

Wow…rocket science indeed. I just anodised my mast so it looked pretty.

But seriously, all of that does make good sense. Further to the mast bend/control issue…did anything progress on the vang strop positioning suggestion that was raised at the AGM? I would have thought the lower the better from a control perspective.

Perhaps one of our metallurgists can help out with this one…is it true that the process of anodising has some effect on the alloy that will alter its stiffness? Someone once told me it did. In my old Mirror days we used to try and get very stiff bottom sections without increasing wall thickness…as I recall by ordering some kind of temper that was designed for ultralight aricraft spars (it was just 50mm tube). The spec was T6061…or something like that.

All too much like rocket science for me…
